My intention as a psychotherapist is to create a safe and supportive environment in which people can learn and share more about themselves, and in so doing, ease their suffering and create possibilities of positive movement and change in their lives. I am grounded in a relational and psychodynamic approach. This means that I am attuned to building a respectful interactive relationship, and that I bring an awareness of the deep impact of the past on people's present lives. My practice is diverse, with a specialization in trauma focused psychotherapy. Other areas of expertise are the treatment of depression, grief and loss, anxiety, relational issues, emotional regulation, and difficulties with family of origin.

This world is challenging and it is normal to have periods of struggle. I help clients move through stressful times and life challenges by developing healthier relationships and emotional patterns. As a therapist, I am both very supportive of my clients and I also provide feedback and opportunities for growth. I view therapy as both an art and a science. I tailor my approach to the unique needs of each individual client. I value the diversity of the human experience and therefore affirm and respect those from all racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds, and sexual and gender orientations. I have particular expertise working with Depression, Anxiety, OCD, ADHD, Couples, Career struggles, Trauma, Grief, and issues with Self-esteem and Identity. I enjoy working with young adults and teens. I have worked as the clinical director at several universities, most recently at Creighton University. I have specialized training in DBT therapy. I value the diversity of human experience and I am therefore affirming of all: racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual and gender orientations, and religious backgrounds.
Elyse Schunkewitz, LCSW is a holistic psychotherapist and brain-based coach/personal trainer. She helps clients rewire their nervous system while improving their mind-body connection. Through a collaborative approach, clients develop strong and healthy habits and mindset and learn how to feel in control of their own bodies. Elyse tends to see clients who are looking for something different from more traditional psychotherapy, may have "tried everything" and are still struggling, or are high performers, athletes, or actors and want to take their achievements to the next level. She works with a variety of issues including chronic pain, eating disorders, post concussion syndrome, anxiety, depression, executive functioning concerns, and more. Clients walk away from therapy with Elyse with noticeable improvements in how they move, feel, and perform both physically and mentally.
We work in the evolving tradition of contemporary psychoanalysis, with a relational focus and deep respect for the soci-cultural and political complexities we face as individuals and collectively. We respect the deep nature of many emotional issues and their interpersonal origin in real life, often traumatic, developmental experiences. We seek to understand your unique developmental needs and how they may have been neglected, hijacked or violated by important figures in your life, as well as social institutions on whom you relied. Therapy - whether individual, couples' or group - is a process of understanding, healing and growing beyond these deep wounds and over-accommodations, freeing you for the emergence of a life that is more authentically your own. Therapy is best done through an open, intimate relationship with a professional dedicated to understanding your unique pain, who recognizes your needs for safety and emotional validation, and creates the space for the emergence of greater self-expression, agency and growth, allowing you to be more fully engaged and alive to yourself and to others. More in control of shaping your identity and destiny. As a group of clinicians we are deeply familiar with the struggles of launching oneself into adulthood. Therapy with me is relational, collaborative, and relatable. My approach also touches on the mind-body connection, and I have training in ecotherapy. I enjoy helping people find and embrace the intersections of nature, the outdoors, and movement with mental health. I specialize in working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds (BIPOC & LGBTQ+ adults) who are navigating life’s challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, anger management, identity exploration (racial, sexual, and gender), abuse, and internalized shame. You don’t have to carry it all alone, shrink yourself, or show up perfectly—I’m here to offer a supportive, affirming space where you can show up authentically, be seen, and heal in a way that feels aligned with your values. As a Black, queer, Afro-traditional spiritualist, my work is deeply rooted in love, liberation, and wellness. I believe healing is both a personal and collective journey—one that calls for self-exploration, connection, and the unlearning of narratives that no longer serve us. My approach blends personal wisdom with professional expertise, allowing me to support clients in understanding how systemic oppression and interpersonal experiences shape their daily lives. I am passionate about creating spaces where people can reclaim their autonomy, heal from trauma, and redefine their narratives in ways that honor their truth. I believe that transformation happens when we feel safe enough to show up fully as ourselves, and I strive to cultivate that safety for every client I work with. If you're seeking a space to explore, heal, and step into your power, I’d be honored to walk alongside you! If you’re interested in reinviting balance and harmony back into your life, please feel free to send an email to awilhite@therapyinsghtspractice.com so that we can discuss further.

At McGarril Mental Health Counseling, we believe that therapy works best when it's honest, well-informed, and deeply human. We founded this practice because we saw too many people struggling to find therapists who were both clinically excellent and genuinely present. Too often, mental health care feels either coldly clinical or lacks the evidence-based foundation that creates lasting change. We work with clients 18 and over, dealing with depression, anxiety, substance use, relationship issues, grief, eating disorders, and much more. We use EMDR, DBT, IFS, ACT, and CBT approaches. We're committed to offering something different: relational and trauma-informed therapy that combines rigorous training with authentic connection. We show up fully—bringing our expertise, our continued learning, and our humanity to every session.
You might look like you have things together on the outside—but internally, you’re dealing with anxiety, overthinking, and feeling like everyone else has it figured out except you. Sound familiar? College can be a time of growth and excitement, but I know it can also feel overwhelming and isolating, too. I work with college students who are dealing with anxiety, stress, relationship drama, and that constant “what am I doing with my life?” feeling. I’m not a “sit in silence” therapist; I take an active and collaborative approach, which means I’ll ask questions, give feedback, and help you actually make sense of what’s going on (and what to do about it). I'll give you practical tools you can actually use in your day-to-day life, and together we’ll work on building confidence and setting boundaries so you can work towards feeling more like yourself and less "stuck" in patterns that aren't serving you. If you’re ready for therapy that feels real, supportive, and actually helpful, let’s connect.
